Why did my ETF fall when the market rose?

An ETF can fall while a broad market index rises because it may track different holdings, countries, sectors, currencies or commodities. The label 'the market' rarely matches every ETF.

Key points

  • International ETFs can move because of changes in the Australian dollar.
  • Sector and thematic ETFs may behave very differently from the ASX 200.
  • Fees, distributions, tracking differences and overseas market hours can affect the quoted price.

What to check next

Check the ETF's benchmark, top holdings, country and sector weights, currency hedging and whether it recently traded ex-distribution.
